Miombo Biochar Project
New collaboration with FSC-certified forestry in Mozambique. The forest is part of the Miombo Woodlands, the world’s second-largest forest ecosystem.
Collaboration:
Reverse Carbon has initiated collaboration with Levasflor to establish biochar production and promote sustainable biochar practices. Levasflor operates FSC-certified forestry in Mozambique’s Safala province.
The goal is to implement biochar carbon removal to valorise residues available from sustainable forestry. This has potential to enhance the financial viability of further developing and expanding sustainable forestry practices in the area that reduces deforestation rates and enables ecosystem rehabilitation.
Forest Management and Biomass:
Biomass used in the project is 100% FSC-certified, with a strong chain of custody certification that has been maintained since 2006.
A digital traceability system ensures transparency, allowing every harvested tree to be tracked from the forest to processing.
Removing harvest residues reduces the risk of uncontrolled wildfires thereby protecting carbon stocks and forest health.
Biodiversity:
Artificial regeneration is used in degraded areas, with native species being planted.
The concession area is treated as a conservation area, with a focus on rare, threatened, and endangered species, such as lions, leopards, ground pangolins, and southern ground hornbills.
Social Co-benefits:
The project not only focuses on ecosystem rehabilitation but also on improving the social conditions in the region.
Levasflor, provides healthcare, education, vocational training, and an agroforestry program to enhance food security and reduce harmful agricultural practices.
A large proportion (90%) of the workforce is sourced locally, with adherence to international health, safety standards, and ILO requirements.
